I Ordered From ‘The Big Book Box’ And I Was Disappointed

Last month was my birthday month (32 and adult-ish) and I wanted to gift myself something special (I will be doing a gift haul post soon). I’ve been reading about book boxes for a long time now, and in the last two years, I’ve seen a rise in Indian book boxes. So choosing one for myself on my big day seemed like a natural thing to do. I didn’t really have a specific reason for choosing The Big Book Box (TBBB) except that it promised a few Harry Potter goodies and the sucker that I am for anything Potter related, I fell for it, instantly.

I placed an order about a week before my birthday (February 23), assuming that I will get it either on my birthday, March 1, or sometime that week. Well, I got it today, April 2! The late schedule, however, is my own fault. The website has a clear FAQ section that states delivery dates, which I obviously didn’t read because I got distracted by the words ‘Harry Potter goodies’. Also, in my tiny bit of defense, the bill that I got on my email mentioned that I will get it within 7 days of dispatch but  I didn’t bother checking when that would be happening. Duh! I would have preferred having an asterisk over the dispatch date on the bill to let people know that the timelines tend to differ but this one’s totally my fault!

Anyhoo after a lot of waiting, some tears and Instagram messages later (they take time to address your queries), I FINALLY got my box, and I wish I loved it!

I opted for the Espresso Box that consists of two books, and “some amazing merches”. I paid Rs. 1599 for it, which is decent for a box with two books plus accessories.

The disappointment for me was the quality. I understand shipping problems, but its quite heartbreaking when your Ravenclaw lip balm is not just broken, but the branding is essentially a piece of paper stuck to a random lip balm cover – better quality and good glue, please.

“Perfection is beyond the reach of humankind, beyond the reach of magic.” Eh?

Wasn’t too happy with the Popeye bracelet either – zoom in and you’ll see a damaged end. The point is, I’ve paid for this and I expect quality – basic stuff!

The two books include The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar and The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius. The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock reached subscribers of TBBB before it’s actual release in India, which is quite amazing. For me, since it came late, not so much! (You can buy it here.) The second book, The Murderer’s Ape released in December last year and you can buy it here. I don’t know what the standards are, but for a December book to be in a March box is late – if that’s how it works for all boxes then it’s not so great! Oh and there’s a sample copy of The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert which released in February this year – a good timeline in this case, plus now you know whether you want to spend Rs. 465 (paperback) on this or not.

I would definitely give a 5/5 to the books.

I wasn’t too happy with the accessories! In their defense, this was the anniversary box, and the volume was A LOT, although this is also why it should have been perfect.

Here are the rest of the pictures.

This pouch is cute.

Love the names on the candles – Nancy Drew, Tintin, and Sherlock – but they don’t smell great.

One of the few things I loved but the errors are a little hard to ignore. I am an extreme Potterhead and not putting “that” in “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good” will BUG me. Also its “up to” not “upto”  #SorryButYouCantMessThisUpYaar!

This, my friends, is pure love. It’s a map for book land!

This was the wrapping paper, and I loved it. Any guesses why?

At the end of the day, I would not reorder – it looks cute, but it isn’t really the best. Any suggestions for which book box I should order next? Let me know, I am a sucker for Harry Potter, Indian authors, and YA.

EDIT 1: The team got in touch and are sending out a replacement for the damaged products. Once I get them, I’ll update the post.

EDIT 2: It’s been close to three weeks and I am still waiting to get the promised replacement.

EDIT 3: The products finally came, four weeks after the box reached me. Quite disappointed by the timeline. Glad for the replacement, but again, that’s basic stuff. Not ordering this again anytime soon.
